The Children with Disabilities Service (CWDS) is a specialist team based at the Civic Offices (2 Watling Street, Bexleyheath, DA6 7AT). The team comprises of social workers, social work assistants and an Occupational Therapist. We are responsible for the assessment of children with severe and profound disabilities up to the age of 18 and the provision of information, and the packages of support to meet their assessed needs.
Who we are:
The team provides services to children aged 0-18 who are able to be registered as children with disabilities under the following categories:
• Significant learning disability
• Physical disability
• Chronic ill health
When the child and family are in need of:
• Social work advice and support
• Care package provision
• The child is looked after by the Local Authority
• Safeguarding and Child protection services
What we do:
The Children Act 1989 required all Social care departments to put together a register of children with disabilities. We have a Register Co-ordinator in the team who collects information for Bexley Children with Disabilities Register. The information is added to a register database which holds information about children and young people 0-18 with a disability.
The information is used as a planning tool so that we know how many children with disabilities live in Bexley and helps us to make better provision for them. The information is confidential but may be shared with other departments within London Borough of Bexley and other agencies such as Health.
We have a Paediatric Occupational Therapist (OT) in the team. The OT can provide advice/support regarding adaptations and for specialist children’s equipment at home. Services for major and minor adaptations in the home are based on the Disabled Facilities Grant criteria. A home assessment will be required to assess the needs of the child.
